Which two big novels of the past two years borrowed their titles from “Macbeth”? Nailing the answer — “Birnam Wood” and “Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow” — might make you feel a little smug. ), is enough to spur you to buy a book, the way a search-optimized headline compels you to click a link. The name of a book becomes more memorable when it echoes something you might have heard — or think you should have heard — before. Before the turn of the 20th century titles were more descriptive than allusive.

London CNN —In the spring of 1888, New York socialite Eleanora Iselin welcomed the portrait artist John Singer Sargent into her home, feverish over the question of what she would wear. Despite curating a selection of her best frocks, Eleanor Iselin was captured in her casual day dress at the insistence of Sargent. Working during the rise of haute couture, both Sargent and his subjects were living through a new dawn of fashion. Rachel was styled in a scrap of pink fabric which Sargent manipulated on canvas to become a dress. “Their work was ready-to-wear, using off the (rack) elements of portraiture, whereas with Sargent it always was bespoke.

After moving back to the US for high school, I felt like my classes were a joke. When my family moved back to the US, I started my freshman year of high school. And while that learning stagnated a bit in the US, high school was great social fun. High school felt like a joke by comparison. Much of what I learned in my chemistry and algebra classes in high school was a repeat of 8th grade.

McKenzie’s accent is a bit wobblier than Hathaway’s, but once you’re over that hump, the pair are thrilling together. McKenzie plays Eileen as a wide-eyed girl in arrested development who might have been an ingénue if she’d ever had a moment to sparkle. That’s you, Eileen. Oldroyd’s cold but keen eye for women pushed to the edge of a nervous breakdown by boorish, violent men meets rich ground here. Not just Eileen, but Rebecca and several other female characters are not good or angelic women, and yet they’ve clearly bent themselves to fit molds made by men.

CNN —William Shakespeare’s influence over the world remains unwavering more than four centuries after the renowned dramatist began his career. To mark the continued resonance of the famed playwright’s words 400 years after the publication of his “First Folio” on November 8, 1623, British filmmaker Jack Jewers has sent a portrait of Shakespeare along with a speech from one of his best-known works to the edge of space. A team from aerospace company Sent Into Space helped with the space flight. “I had this image in my head: a portrait of Shakespeare – the universal playwright, whose work I truly believe speaks to everyone – backgrounded by space, with earth’s curvature in the background. “The parallels are uncanny and Shakespeare’s words are fresher now than ever before in their ability to speak powerfully to our own contemporary lives,” he added.

William Shakespeare's First Folio on display at Christies in London, April 24, 2023. Shakespeare's First Folio was compiled by his friends and published on Nov. 8, 1623, seven years after his death. Some 750 copies are believed to have been printed, containing 36 of the 37 plays Shakespeare wrote, arranged for the first time as comedies, tragedies and histories. "A tiny copy of the speech we used, which is 'The Lovers and Madmen' speech from 'Midsummer Night's Dream', (was) inserted into the portrait," Jewers told Reuters. "The Stranger's Case" features a speech Shakespeare contributed to an unperformed play alongside footage of refugees at sea.

Shakespeare’s First Folio Turns 400
  + stars: | 2023-11-03 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Now known as the First Folio, that volume has become a lodestone of Shakespeare scholarship over the centuries, offering the most definitive versions of his work along with clues to his process and plenty of disputes about authorship and intention. In honor of its 400th anniversary, the British Library and Rizzoli recently released a facsimile version of the First Folio. On this week’s episode, The Times’s critic at large Sarah Lyall talks with Adrian Edwards, head of the library’s Printed Heritage Collections, about Shakespeare’s work, the library’s holdings and the cultural significance of that original volume. “If we didn’t have the First Folio, given that all the manuscript versions of the plays are lost, we wouldn’t have plays such as ‘The Tempest’ or ‘Twelfth Night’ or ‘A Winter’s Tale’ or ‘Julius Caesar’ or ‘Antony Cleopatra’ or ‘Macbeth,’” Edwards says. NEW YORK (AP) — On the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's First Folio, rare originals are being displayed and publishers are offering collectors editions of Shakespeare's plays, including one that sells for $1,500. The British Museum is collaborating with Rizzoli Books in New York on “Shakespeare’s First Folio: 400th Anniversary Facsimile Edition,” contained within a slipcase cover. Besides Doran's introduction, the Folio Society release includes a foreword by Dame Judi Dench. “In an era when everything seems disposable, I feel like there's a good market for fine editions of classic books,” says Folio Society publishing director Tom Walker. “You can buy a Ben Jonson folio for a few thousand dollars; a Shakespeare folio will cost you millions.

In a crowded debate, you can tell which candidates are seen as the greatest threat because they take the most incoming fire from their rivals. Watching the DeSantis campaign collapse has been an extraordinarily edifying spectacle. Trump endorsed DeSantis for governor of Florida when DeSantis was struggling against a strong Republican opponent for the party’s nomination. So, there was always something in the DeSantis campaign that knew that he was Macbeth coming to kill his king. He lacks the courage, which is ironic given that DeSantis wrote a book before his run entitled, “The Courage to Be Free.”

On a recent Wednesday, a dozen members of the cast of “Camelot” gathered in a circle in a rehearsal room in the basement of Lincoln Center Theater. As Philippe began speaking, Matthews squinted his eyes shut and silently mouthed the words. “Even now I curse the day——” Philippe said before he was quickly cut off by Matthews, who jabbed a finger in the air. “You went down on ‘day,’” Matthews said, referring to Philippe’s incorrect inflection. Over the next two hours, Matthews paced the room coaching the group through monologues from “Julius Caesar,” “Henry IV” and “Macbeth,” interrupting a performer to correct the pronunciation of “doth,” or to help find the “internal shape” in a text.

PROCESS We meet in the back room of the Revision Lounge, a bar in the East Village, where one of the members works. As a theater company, we’re still learning what life after the pandemic is like. POOR PLAYERS We usually break out our scripts and refine what we’ve done or are transforming. Our next play is Macbeth, which we perform at various places, the bar, Sure We Can, or at people’s homes. Every actor learns the complete text of the play and we change roles on impulse so it’s constantly shifting.

Are the travails of the bond market, like Macbeth expounds, a "tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing?" The billionaire class — so incorrectly sought after by the media — so often seems to use the bond market as a sort of intellectual cudgel. That's why I always start my discussion on bonds with the simple query of "where are the layoffs, not forget about stocks, think fixed income." Here the bond market polices only those companies that haven't pivoted to making a profit. They, among all sectors, could be pummeled by the bond market freeze and by the consumers' paralysis.

Macduff, the chorus, Macbeth’s big Act IV aria — all scrapped. In typical stagings, Lady Macbeth comes across as an unsubtle, unrepentant harridan whose abrupt crisis of conscience in the opera’s final act stretches credulity. Heartbeat starts with Lady Macbeth’s breakdown as the essential truth of her character and then molds the narrative to fit it. The show begins with Lady Macbeth in bed, sobbing uncontrollably, full of remorse for all the blood she has helped to shed. In Heartbeat’s telling, Lady Macbeth, no longer the scapegoat for her husband’s foul behavior, is the one who is led astray by an avaricious spouse.
Hey, Bing, Help Me Overcome My Fear of College Basketball

I’m still learning so I appreciate your understanding and patience.🙏Do you know a lot about college basketball, and do you enjoy talking about it? Why are people so obsessed about the college basketball brackets? I've never filled out a college basketball March Madness bracket, and I heard that it's virtually impossible to do completely accurately, even if you predict the winner. When filling out my college basketball bracket, should I just guess according to what team names I like the best? :)I’m afraid I can’t fill out a March Madness bracket, as I’m just a chat mode of Microsoft Bing search.

The Sundance Film Festival has long been known for premiering some of the most original — and ultimately the most award-winning — indie titles of the year. As the most notable international film festivals increasingly feature queer titles in their lineups, it’s no surprise that much of the exciting content premiering at this year’s Sundance Film Festival comes from LGBTQ filmmakers or features queer themes. The Premieres sectionAs usual, many of the year’s most high-profile films, including those from queer creators and featuring queer storylines, are coming out of the festival’s Premieres section. Courtesy of Sundance InstituteEnglert’s film will screen in the world cinema dramatic section alongside queer films “Girl,” from U.K. filmmaker Adura Onashile, and “Mamacruz,” from Spanish director Patricia Ortega. The list of LGBTQ creators and titles doesn’t end there, making this perhaps the most significant Sundance Film Festival for queer cinema yet.

A friend and I both turn 85 this year. His life-expectancy prediction may be generous, as the actuarial number is closer to 6 years. It is important to know when and how to leave each stage of life. Macbeth laments: “Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player / That struts and frets his hour upon the stage / And then is heard no more. It is a tale / Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, / Signifying nothing.”
